1982 Girls’ Basketball Team–Undefeated State Champions

Inducted 2025

Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we honor one of the truly special teams in Kansas high school basketball history. The 1982 squad did not just win games—they captured the hearts of their community and left behind a legacy of excellence that still inspires today.

That season, they stormed through the schedule with a flawless 25–0 record, claiming both the CNC League title and the State Championship. Their perfect run was a culmination of years of hard work, discipline, and an unbreakable bond as teammates.

But their story goes beyond one season.  With the guidance of head coach, Tom German, this remarkable senior class—led by Penne Cherry, Kelly Jones, and Barbara Swink—was part of two undefeated state championship teams during their careers. Over the course of their time in high school, they compiled an extraordinary 93–4 record, made three state tournament appearances, and brought home two perfect state titles.

It is a record that speaks for itself, but what truly set this group apart was their relentless spirit, their dedication to one another, and their ability to rise to the moment when it mattered most.

Inducted into the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2009, the 1982 team stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when talent meets teamwork, and when determination meets opportunity.

Tonight, we celebrate not just their victories on the court, but the pride and tradition they built for all who would follow. The 1982 undefeated state champions will forever hold their place among the greatest in Kansas basketball history.
