Guido Saccane Bio

Guido Saccane joined the Frontenac staff in 1924 and began a storied career as our first girls basketball coach.  In a time when girls wore bloomers and blouses, Saccane’s team stood out as the first team in the area to wear short pants.  The rugged Frontenac teams of that time were coal miners’ daughters, and they showed the toughness and grit that was instilled in them by their families and coach on the court.  In 1927, Coach Saccane led the Raiders to the state championship game, where they would be defeated by Cockrell High School, a team that was out for revenge after Frontenac had become the first team in 47 games to defeat them earlier in the 1926-27 season.  Coach Saccane was disappointed to have the girls basketball program cut after the 1927 season, and he would go on to serve as the head football coach in 1929 before leaving the school for a time.  Guido Saccane was welcomed back to Frontenac in 1940-41 before again, only to return for a third time from 1957-1967.

Coach Saccane displayed toughness, grit, and discipline throughout his time at Frontenac High School, and is being inducted into the hall of fame as a founding member of our storied girls basketball team!
